In the Vologda region one of the regional priority projects "Timber industry development" is being elaborated.

Currently round logs are exported only from western parts of the region. No raw wood is exported from other parts. Although Vologda has always been a region delivering round logs to other regions, recently volume of wood processed in the region has significantly increased. Currently 61% of harvested wood in processed locally (as compared to earlier index 30%). Annually export of round logs to other regions is decreasing by some 5-6%.

The regional project "Timber industry development" implies realization of 3 mega-projects aimed at development of deep wood processing and complex use of forest resources:

1. In Veliky Ustyug large plant on chip board production is planned to be constructed.

2. Facilities of existing pulp-and-paper plants in Sokol are to be modernized and reconstructed.

3. Large integrated wood processing complex "Suda" is to be constructed in Cherpovets district.

Beside the above mentioned mega-projects further development of wood processing and production of value-added wood products characterize the region - reconstruction and modernization of existing wood processing facilities, launch of new facilities for wood harvesting and deep wood processing, as well as launch of energy generating enterprises using wood as rawmaterial.
