Low-grade wood utilization in Altay area Print
Wednesday, 03 March 2010

A mill for wood wastes utilization is to be constructed in Barnaul (Altay area). The project aims at receiving necessary products of low-grade wood and sawmilling wastes. There are to be applied foreign technologies, including wood waste crushing.

There is already wastless production in the region. Sawmilling wastes are used as fuel for boiler-houses at mills, for heating production facilities and social objects. However, at the same time low-grade wood (especially of hardwoods) is not practically used and makes forests debris-strewn, whereas it can be a raw material for furniture shield and pellet production.

In 2009 commercial output of processed products increased by 19% as compared to 2008. It caused not increased logging volume but developing advanced woodworking. Besides, 2 mln cubic meters of wood (mostly hardwoods) are not used at all. Absence of mills for low-grade wood processing led to accumulation of mature and overripe leafy forests in the area. That’s why the local government took a decision on construction of a large mill for low-grade wood utilization (annual capacity – 2 mln cubic meters).
